A newly formed Oxford-based chamber ensemble exploring repertoire from Haydn to Britten, alongside contemporary arrangements and cross-genre work.
The Wells Quartet, named after the Damon Wells Chapel (Pembroke College) in which we frequently rehearse, is an exciting, newly formed chamber group. We enjoy performing a vast repertoire from Haydn to Britten, alongside works outside of the classical sphere: the Danish String Quartet arrangements prove a favourite and provide us with an opportunity to develop our musicality in other directions. In our relatively short existence as a quartet, we have performed high-profile gigs — a highlight being the Societies and Royal Honours Reception at the Divinity Schools — and are beginning to gain a footing in the musical scene across Oxford. Recent performances include recitals at Wadham, New College, and Pusey House, as well as a masterclass with members of the Carducci Quartet in collaboration with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.
Our members work in a wide range of academic fields: Biophysics (Julius), Public Health (Neil), Mortality and Harmony (Yuqi), and Music (Oscar). As such, we hold a wealth of experience that informs our music making.
